love in her eyes and flowers in her hair

valentine’s day is officially over. you are now allowed to a) cry because you’ve already eaten all of your chocolate and your roses are slowly dying or b) breathe a sigh of relief that you have 364 more days to enjoy before you are made aware of your single-ness again or c) smile because you had a great day and enjoyed celebrating with the ones that you love. or maybe it’s some combination of a, b, & c. or maybe it’s something else entirely. those are just my best guesses. at any rate, i had a new experience on valentine’s day this year that i feel compelled to write about:

i won a blind, double valentine’s day date with the editor-in-chief of my school newspaper. come again? yes, i who have never won anything, won a date. i entered the contest for several reasons, but mainly because it was something outside of my comfort zone and also because i knew i wouldn’t have anything more exciting to do on february 14th. liles, my date, wrote a pre-date article, which i found very interesting although i read it after our “wacky” date. so here i am, a humble blogger, ready to comment on my evening.

i had never been on a blind date before. the only information i was given was to expect liles on my doorstep at 7 pm and a free dinner at paolucci’s. ok, i could handle that. even better: liles was on my doorstep at 7 pm with roses. excellent! the other two win a date participants were mary elizabeth (lifestyles editor) and her date, kader. these two already knew each other. the four of us enjoyed good conversation over a delicious dinner. i laughed a lot, smiled a lot, learned a lot about newspaper production and had a wonderful time.

in his article, liles mentions the picture the appalachian ran of me last week. though perhaps captivating, this image told him little about me. now that our date is over, i realize that the questions he entertained beforehand were never answered during the course of the night.
  • “what kind of music she is into” | oh, i love it all. today i’ve been listening to my favorite love songs from performers across many genres. recently i’ve been listening to jimmy eat world albums on repeat.
  • “what she likes to do for fun” | test new recipes, watch movies, spend time at price lake (when it is warm!), blog, go to concerts, organize things
  • “what she hates to hear people talk about” | i’m a communication major. i pretty much love to talk about everything.

i had never seen “5 things you should know before dating a journalist,” but it’s an awesome piece: “so, you’ve been eyeing that smart, attractive journalist you’re lucky enough to know personally. you’re intrigued.” i did not know liles personally before tonight, but i am certainly intrigued. as for a second date? i suppose we’ll have to wait to read mr. neal’s account of his date with the girl with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair.
